Fairlawn council expected to approve pay raises for all city employees
fairlawn: If you work for the city of Fairlawn you could see a little more in your paycheck next year.Council members introduced legislation this week declaring that all labor agreements were settled.City administrators and the city’s five unions have agreed to a 3 percent pay raise in 2012. Similar raises are in store for part-time workers. The pay raises will be extended to non-union workers too.“All the bargaining units are different, but in general we try to give parity with all the contracts,” said Mayor Bill Roth. “Last year there were no raises. We had cutbacks and paid more in benefits.”The last time Fairlawn employees had raises was in 2009. Those raises were also at 3 percent.“We do one year at a time, with wage reopeners for next year,” the mayor said. “All parties understand based on revenues and the economy that we really cannot predict past 2012.”There are 75 full-time union employees and 50 part-time employees working for the city. There are 27 full-time non-bargaining employees.Wages and employee benefits make up about 75 percent of the city’s general fund.Next year’s operating budget is estimated at $11 million – 2 percent lower than this year’s budget.Assistant Finance Director Patricia Bertsch said the reduction is the result of reduction in the number of employees. She said the work force is down for 2012 by five or six positions and not all of them will be filled. The bargaining units include: Ohio Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association for Communications Specialists (six full-time employees), Fraternal Order of Police, Ohio Labor Council Inc. for Police Sergeants (five full-time employees), Fraternal Order of Police, Ohio Labor Council Inc. for Patrol Officers (13 full-time employees), Fairlawn Professional Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 4164 (12 full-time employees), International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local No. 436 for Service Department employees (12 full-time employees), Ohio Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association for part-time patrol officers, seven part-time officers and Part-time Employees of the Division of Fire and Emergency Rescue Service for part-time EMS/Firefighters (28 part-time employees). The City Council is expected to vote on each of the agreements when it meets Dec. 19.
